MARNI “100 chairs” and “ABI-TANTI. The migrating multitude”
Marni presents in the new space in viale Umbria 42 in Milan, the 2013 edition of the project “100 chairs”, which includes models and colours linked to the idea of urban sitting rooms.
The collection, which is composed of chairs, chaise-longue, rocking chairs and tables, has been enriched by models in bright colours designed for children. The sitting rooms have been created in colour variations fit for interior spaces, featuring new models, woven patterns and combinations. Again this production has been entirely made by hand in Colombia by ex-prisoners, aiming to reinforce the prisoners resettlement into social and working life.
During the Salone del Mobile 2013 MARNI meets “ABI-TANTI. The migrating multitude”, a project of the Education Department of the Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, which calls into play the concepts of identity and difference, the encounter with the otherness – the being that comes to us from another world. The Inhabi-tants are small objects in form of
humanoids/robots with arms, bodies, heads and feet made out of industrial waste in the shape of small sticks, spheres, semi-spheres and cubes. On April 13th and 14th a workshop will be held at Spazio MARNI in viale Umbria 42 where it will be possible to create the Inhabi-tants of the Marni family, which will join the numerous families created throughout the world. Recycled materials, as well as fabrics and components of bijou, part of the Marni collections, can be assembled to build a new Inhabi-tant. The chairs of Marni and the Inhabi-tants come from faraway and peacefully invade the spaces.
As well as a commitment to use recycled materials, the project reaffirms Marni’s involvement with charitable initiatives with a donation being made to a worthy cause.
Marni is pleased to announce that the Design Museum, London, has nominated Marni’s Charity project “100 CHAIRS: L’ARTE DEL RITRATTO” for the Designs of the Year 2013 awards.
The charity project “Marni: 100 chairs” was first presented during the Salone del Mobile 2012, followed by a new edition of 125 chairs during Art Basel and Design Miami 2012 and is now being re-edited in a different format for the upcoming Salone del Mobile in April 2013. All chairs are made in Colombia by ex-prisoners and consist of metal structure and multi-colored PVC threads featured on the backs and armrests. The style of furniture is common with Colombian families, but Marni re-interpreters the classic design by modifying the woven pattern and creating new color variations.
This Marni venture aims to support the resettlement of prisoners into social and working life.
The project falls into the category “Furniture”, where Marni is the only fashion brand nominated. Two styles will be exhibited at the Design Museum from March 20th until July 7th. Category winners will be decided by a jury on April 17th.
